Subject: RE: Our trip to Helsinki and Russia

The river boat travel is a nice way to go for us older people.

Both Moscow and St. Petersburg were wonderful and beautiful as well as the small towns along the Volga and other canals and lakes.  The people were so nice and pleasant!  Above all, it was an education for us—and that is my definition of an excellent trip.  I learned a lot about the history of the USSR and before that with the czars.  I recommend a trip like this for everyone.  We Americans have a lot to learn about the world.

Subject: Our trip to Helsinki and Russia

I wanted to let you know that all of us are most appreciative of your help in getting us to and from Helsinki and Russia .

Everything worked out fine.  The train trip was enjoyable and all of the tickets and reservations were as you planned and described.  The hotels in Helsinki were very nice, especially the Scandia Grand Marina.  Thanks for your recommendations.  We were all somewhat tired the last night so we ate in the hotel and found their menu quite good and the service was excellent.

It was an enjoyable trip—thanks for your effort—I know it was a bit difficult for you.

Sincerely,

Ross

I have returned from Russia and wanted to let you know that my daughter and I had a fantastic time with the tour guide you provided.
Tatiana was, I believe, her name and she was excellent company.
Tolstoy has always been a great personal hero to me. I thank you so very much for helping me arrange this. It was the trip of a lifetime.
With all thanks,

Subject: RE: The trip!

The trip was amazing...everything we wanted and more!

St. Petersburg  was fabulous. We loved the hotel, people, sights, etc. We saw the ballet, Romeo & Juliet .....beautiful!  Our guide, Anna was wonderful  as was our driver, Konstatin. All three of us were very happy with  them. She's very, very smart (a teacher during the year). We were  only her second clients, but we did not learn this until later. She  couldn't have been better and we became great friends. The hotel was  great.....location, service, concierge (best we had). We were on the  Business Center floor so we had access to the lounge which was air- conditioned with a free computer and large screen t.v. ---a definite  bonus especially in 30c weather. The brunch was upscale and excellent  quality. The Express train was fun and much more upscale than the  Ukrainian ones. We definitely travel too heavily. Finding places for  the luggage became a comical challenge and we do know better! Moscow was something else. It felt the most like we expected (still  that Soviet feel). Of course the sense of history and politics  makes  it special. The Budapest was the least friendly hotel of the lot. The  desk clerks were not always service oriented (actually what we had  anticipated). There was no concierge so they suggested that we go to  their sister hotel for one, The Pietra. It was her day off. By the way, this is a new hotel and looks like a real possibility for you to  consider. The breakfast buffet at Budapest was not a buffet  breakfast. Each morning they brought us a plastic tray with 2 slices  of white bread, 2 slices of ham, 2 slices of cheese, yogurt, milk,  thick coffee & juice.  It was abundant, but not good. They told us  they don't have a restaurant and this is the way they serve  breakfast. Our last morning we went to Pietra for breakfast. Our room  was great though. It was a suite and had good a/c. We were impressed with the sophistication of both cities. The  restaurants were terrific and not cheap, but we loved them. We saw a  performance by The Russian National Dance Company...great! Shopping  was a big surprise, very upscale. One shoe store in Moscow had shoes  that began at $200 and went to over $1200. Our guide Katerina was  fine. She wasn't the brightest star, but she was pleasant.
Kiev was terrific. The hotel location was excellent and they were friendly. We wound up in the middle of a lot of action which made it  fun. There was Youth Day (I guess they just celebrated their youth).
It was a full festival with music up and down the streets, vendors,  street games and crowds galore. Being there during  the World Cup game that they won made it even more amazing....celebrations  everywhere. We also saw a demonstration march of the trade unions protesting the price of gas & oil. They estimate 50,000 people participated and they were all outside our window...another experience. Again, fabulous sights and food. Our guide, Ludmila was smart, smart (a former university teacher of English). She was very  accommodating and went out of her way to please us. She too became a  dear friend. Our driver, Genia was adorable. When we arrived way too  early for the train, he stayed with us and told us to stay in the a/c  van.
Dnepropetrovsk was quite the experience. The hotel was lovely and the  people could not have been sweeter. We were able to have them arrange for an interpreter who spent 2 half days with us. She hired the taxi  at the hotel (cheap and very willing to go wherever we wanted). She's  an 18 year old architecture student whose part time job is as an  interpreter for a dating service! She's sharp and would be a good  connection for you should you need someone in Dnepr. I can give you  her email. We spent the first day on the city tour, etc. and the  second day they helped us pursue the street that my grandparents  lived on 100 years ago. What an experience! It was very emotional for  me and they were wonderful. Poor Vladimir took his old car down  unpaved roads in a not so great area. He told us (through her) that  there can be "bandits" in this area! We all laughed when I asked her  to tell him "crazy Americans". They were both very good sports. It  seems that the city is attempting to spruce things up. They have  built walkways and gardens along the river and added some restaurants  there. Clearly, as our desk clerk told us "this is not a tourist city". We know that it was closed for so many years and they have a long way to go, but the people were all cordial and helpful.
Odessa was the opposite end of the spectrum. We found it joyous and  fun in spite of it's sad history. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to do the catacombs, but we were so glad that we did. Amazing! Our  guide, another Ludmila, was excellent. She too was very smart and we parted great friends. One thing that we would change was the way too early pick ups for the trains. In St. Pete we waited 3 hours.... great people watching!
This was the trip of a lifetime with the full range of emotions. There's so much joy and sadness for the people. We feel that we never  really knew the history as we should have. This trip was an eye opener. We also know that on a trip like this one has to just "go  with the flow" and we sure did. I even learned a little Russian.
Thank you for helping to make this go so well. When we saw tour  groups, we were so grateful that we were on our own.
Dennis and I appreciate all your professionalism and advice. We would love to plan another trip with you and we will be delighted to pass  your name on to friends. I'll give you a call tomorrow or next week,  just to keep in touch.
Thanks again.
Warmly,
Wendy & Dennis

Mother and I had a wonderful time on the trip. Your choices of hotels for us were excellent. We were well situated to easily go out on our own after the tours for the day were over. I did not realize until we were there how important it was to have the tours scheduled ahead with the designated date and time of entry for so many of the places. Our guides and drivers were very good. Thank you for all your effort. I will certainly recommend you and your agency to anyone even thinking of going to Russia. I did want you to know how well everything went.

Happily yours,

In order to get tourist visa to Russia for your wife I'd recommend using Russian Travel Agency “Cinderella Travel Co” based in NY. We usually use them when we need help with visas. If you decide to obtain tourist visa for yourself first, it make sense to apply for both visas at the same time.

The agency takes care of the invitations and so on. More details on their web site http://www.cinderellatravel.com/visas_russia.php
